About Hypnosis

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I remember everything afterwards?
That depends on how deep in trance you are, but generally most people do remember either everything or certain parts of the experience.

You will find that suggestions, which have been given to you in hypnosis, will resurface in your conscious, thinking mind after your Hypnosis and these will be the thoughts that produce changes in your behaviour or way of thinking and feeling.

Will I give away any secrets while I am Hypnotised?
NO – you won’t say or do anything at all that you don’t want to. If you were given suggestions that you don’t morally agree with you would come out of hypnosis.

How do I know I will wake up from Hypnosis?

No one has ever remained in hypnosis indefinitely. Even if something were to happen to the hypnotherapist halfway through the session, you would still “come out” of the Trance State once the rapport had been broken.

Is Hypnosis dangerous?

NO – Hypnosis is a perfectly natural tool, which is used to harness the inner power of your subconscious mind.

Therapeutic hypnosis cannot make you do something against your will or your own moral code.

When I am “under” will I fall asleep?

NO – you will be aware of everything that is happening and being said the whole time, however you will be so deeply relaxed that you may find yourself drifting into different levels of awareness.

Remember, your subconscious mind in active throughout and it is this that your therapist is working with.

Are there any side effects from Hypnosis?

The only side effects are the beneficial ones of feeling more relaxed afterwards and feeling more positive about whatever it was you sought hypnotherapy for.

Hypnosis is a perfectly natural state.

How does it feel to be Hypnotised?

Everyone is different. Some people say that their body feels like lead weight and others say they feel as though they’re floating away. Most people will agree that it is a lovely feeling because they’re more relaxed than they have ever been before.

Can I be Hypnotised against my will?

NO - anyone can resist and it won’t work. Hypnosis is co-operation between two people – Therapist and client.

Can anyone be Hypnotised?

Yes anyone can be hypnotised unless the person has frontal lobe brain damage, is a very young child under 6 years of age, or does not want to be hypnotised.

While I give a list of illnesses and issues which hypnotherapy can deal with effectively, I also explain to each client that I personally prefer to work holistically.

By that I mean that I believe that the mind is very powerful and can create disharmony in our mental, emotional and physical bodies. This disharmony is created to signal to the individual that something needs to change - often negative beliefs, behaviour patterns and ways of thinking.

When the client understands this concept, both client and hypnotherapist can work most effectively together to tackle the root cause of the problem presenting.

The issue presenting, no matter what that is, I feel is merely a symptom (actually, I see symptoms as gifts) from your physical, mental or emotional bodies, allowing you an opportunity to heal at the deepest level.

If you believe that illness, accidents and disorders are relevant only to the physical self, you are disassociating yourself from your mental, emotional and spiritual aspects, thereby refusing to acknowledge the majority of what makes you who you really are.

I love working with people who are open to looking within for their answers and who are prepared to take responsibility for their health, both mental and physical.

By that I mean that they are willing to explore how their old ways of thinking and being in the world, may be contributing to the symptom they are seeking help with.

When this happens, the subconscious mind finds a way to heal at the level of understanding, responsibility and willingness shown by the client.

MYTHS ABOUT HYPNOSIS

Stage hypnotists, sensational news stories and gossip has lead many people to believe that when you are hypnotised you are under someone else’s control. Nothing could be further from the truth. When you are hypnotised you are just really relaxed and focused.

Anytime a person wants to, they could get up and walk away. Most people experience Hypnosis as a pleasant feeling of deep relaxation. In trance you will not do or say anything contrary to your conscious wishes, behaviour or morality.

Going into a trance is not the same as being asleep. You are not asleep, you can be aware of everything around you, just like meditation. You are quite capable of bringing yourself out of trance or rejecting the suggestions, that is why, you need to consciously want the changes.

Hypnosis is very different to what you may have learned from the TV and really can’t make you do anything you don’t want to do.

HOW HYPNOTHERAPY WORKS

The hypnotherapists role is to guide the clients awareness into the part of the subconscious mind where change can take place. This method requires a dedicated team effort, with the client accepting responsibility for his or her own recovery through co-operation and commitment to the process.

Hypnotherapy is relatively quick in comparison to other forms of therapy as it is able to access where the issues really are, that is, in your subconscious mind and bring about effective permanent emotional and physical healing.
